In capacity planning, there is an important distinction between source servers and target servers. Source servers are the servers you are monitoring with SQL Governor, whereas target servers represent the future architecture of your environment.
For the engine to normalize the data collected from your source servers, their metadata must be properly configured. In particular, SQL Governor needs to know the hardware on which the servers are running and how many CPU cores they are using.
To configure the metadata, do the following steps:
- Go to Settings: Metadata.
- Select Servers from the dropdown.
- For each server, do the following steps:
- Click the Edit icon.
- Select the Brand, Series, Product line and Model of the server.
- Select the CPU model installed on the server.
- Enter the number of CPU cores in the Cores field. If the server is physical, this is the number of physical CPU cores. If the server is virtual, this is the number of logical cores or threads assigned to the server.
- If the server is virtual and hyperthreading is on, check the Hyperthreaded checkbox.
- If you want to overwrite the metadata of the server with the values you've entered, check the Overwrite setup history checkbox.
- Click the OK icon.
To overwrite the entire history for all servers, click on the Reset history button. Note that this may take a long time. Resetting history is useful when you know that incorrect values have been previously recorded for many servers.
