SQL Governor can automatically adjust the warning and alert thresholds of your performance counters based on the data it has collected. By default, daily auto-adjustment is turned on when you first install SQL Governor. When daily auto-adjusting is on, the warning and alert thresholds will be recalculated every night.
Using the environment-wide daily auto-adjustment
To turn daily auto-adjusting on or off, do the following steps:
- Go to Settings > General.
- Double-click on Daily auto-adjust and type 0 (off) or 1 (on) into the textbox.
- Click Save.

Letting the daily auto-adjustment run every night is often useful during the first few weeks after installation, as SQL Governor collects data and learns more about your system. After a while, however, it should be turned off, as otherwise SQL Governor may start treating unusual situations as the new normal. This can happen if some of your performance counters are constantly climbing higher, causing the thresholds to climb higher as well.
Environment-wide auto-adjustment when you need it
Even if daily auto-adjusting is turned off, you can auto-adjust everything in the environment whenever you need. For example, if you seem to be getting unnecessary alerts all the time, it may be a good idea to refresh the auto-adjustment.
To do this, follow these steps:
- Go to Alerts > Alert configuration.
- Click on ALL in the tree.
- Select Category: ALL from the dropdown menu.
- Click on Auto-adjust.

This will auto-adjust the thresholds for everything and may take some time if you have a lot of databases.
Auto-adjusting individual servers, instances and databases
Instead of auto-adjusting everything in the environment, you can auto-adjust the thresholds for one or more counter groups, as well as single or multiple servers, instances and databases.
To do this, follow these steps:
- Go to Alerts > Alert configuration.
- Click on a server, instance or database node in the tree (select multiple nodes by holding down CTRL).
- Select a category from the dropdown menu.
- Click on Auto-adjust.

This will auto-adjust the thresholds for the selected server(s), instance(s) or database(s) for the counters shown in the list.
Auto-adjusting individual performance counters
At the finest granularity you can auto-adjust a single performance counter of a single node.
To do this, follow these steps:
- Go to Monitoring.
- Click on a server, instance or database node in the tree.
- Click on a performance counter in the lists below the chart.
- Right-click and select Auto-adjust limits from the menu.

From the same menu, you can also quick-adjust the warning and alert thresholds to certain intervals. For more precise control of the thresholds, go to Alerts > Alert configuration.
